The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, who is also the president pro tempore of the Union of the South American Nations (UNASUR), affirmed that the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) and the Mercosur might converge around one single mechanism: the UNASUR.
The Andean Community of Nations is integrated by only four countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). Venezuela was withdrawn by decision of President Hugo Chávez.
The Mercosur has as full members Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Bolivia and Chile are associate and Venezuela is in process of adhesion (the Congress of Paraguay is the only missing to ratify the Protocol).
For Correa, the CAN needs to be revised deeply once the “universe is now the Latin America”.
In the evaluation of the Ecuadorian, the UNASUR made in two and a half years much more than the European Community made in twenty five.
